First-time filings for unemployment benefits jumped unexpectedly last week, dashing hopes that layoffs would show consistent declines.

Here's a look at the states with the biggest changes in initial jobless claims last week, and some of the reasons they gave.

States with many fewer layoffs:

California, down 13,535 due to fewer layoffs in the construction industry.

Pennsylvania, down 9,491 due to fewer layoffs in construction, trade and service industries.

Florida, down 3,587 due to fewer layoffs in construction, trade, service and manufacturing industries, and agriculture.

States with many more layoffs:

Indiana, up 2,014 due to manufacturing layoffs.

Michigan, up 1,724 due to layoffs in the automobile industry.

Arkansas, up 1,334; no reason given.
